The honest market overview

The Cape Town website market breaks into four broad price bands, and each one is a different product wearing the same name:

  • Template mills — R500 to R2,500 once-off. Your logo and text dropped into a pre-made theme, often in a single afternoon.
  • Freelancers — R2,500 to R10,000. Wide quality range: some excellent value, some template work at freelance prices.
  • Agencies — R25,000 to R50,000+ to start. Professional output with account managers, process and overheads built into the price.
  • Subscription builders — R499 to R799 per month. "No upfront cost" website rental. The catch gets its own section below.

What you get — and don't — at each level

Templates (R500–R2,500) are honest products if you need any web presence at all, today, for almost nothing. What you don't get: design decisions made for your business, pages Google can rank, or anything that differentiates you from the other businesses using the same theme. If a customer would ever compare you against a competitor, this tier usually costs more in lost credibility than it saves.

Freelancers (R2,500–R10,000) can be the best value in the market — a skilled independent without agency overheads. The risk is not skill, it's continuity: the same person doing your build is doing support, and freelancers change careers, emigrate and disappear. Ask what happens to hosting, updates and emergencies in year two.

Agencies (R25,000+) deliver reliably professional work with process around it. For corporates that need contracts, compliance and a team on call, the premium is justified. For a small business wanting a site that brings in customers, a large share of the invoice is paying for the machinery, not the website.

Subscription builders (R499–R799/month) hand you a finished-looking site quickly with nothing upfront — genuinely attractive if cash flow is tight. Read the next section before signing anything.

The subscription trap, with real numbers

R499/month sounds like a fraction of an R8,500 once-off build. Run the numbers over the period you will actually keep the website and the picture inverts — and the bigger problem is not the total, it's the last row of this table:

Once-off build vs R499/month subscription over time
Once-off (Bronze, R8,500)Subscription (R499/month)
Cost after 12 monthsR8,500R5,988
Cost after 24 monthsR8,500R11,976
Cost after 48 monthsR8,500R23,952

Own the domain, code & contentYes — all of itUsually the domain at best

Somewhere between month 14 and month 18 the subscription passes the once-off price — and keeps going, forever, without you ever owning anything. The website becomes rent. Every rand you have paid evaporates the day you cancel, which also makes it painful to ever switch providers. That lock-in, not the monthly fee, is the real product.

Our packages, with nothing hidden

RogueTech sits deliberately between the freelancer band and the agency band: senior custom development at prices the businesses of the Blaauwberg corridor can justify. More solid than a R500 template, half the price of the big agencies.

Bronze — R8,500 · Starter Website

One to three custom-designed pages, mobile-first, with contact forms, Google-readable page structure, analytics, and launch on your own domain. Typically live within two weeks. Extra pages and copywriting are quoted upfront, not discovered on the invoice.

Silver — R22,000 · Business Website

A full multi-page website with the features working businesses ask for: booking or quote flows, image galleries, a content system you can edit yourself, ongoing SEO fundamentals, and training on managing it. Three to five weeks, including revisions.

Gold — R55,000 · Custom Web Application

Software, not just a site: client portals, dashboards, quoting engines, internal tools. Scoped and quoted feature-by-feature before we start, demonstrated to you weekly while we build.

Platinum — from R120,000 · SaaS Product Build

A production SaaS product from validation to launch — architecture, multi-tenancy, billing, deployment. Priced per engagement after a strategy call, with the scope in writing.

What's always included, in every tier: you own everything, pricing is agreed before work starts, and you can see full package details on our pricing page or start a scoped quote in five minutes via get started.

How to compare the quotes you're holding

Whoever you end up hiring — us or anyone else — five questions will expose the real differences between quotes that all say "website" on them:

  • Who owns everything when it's done? Domain in whose name, code and content delivered how. If the answer is vague, the price is not the real price.
  • What exactly is included in the number? Ask specifically about copywriting, images, number of revisions, and mobile — the classic "that's extra" items.
  • What happens after launch? Hosting cost, support arrangements, and what a small change (a price update, a new photo) will cost you in month six.
  • Can Google actually read it? Ask whether the site ships with real page titles, descriptions and a sitemap. Many cheap builds are invisible to search engines — which quietly cancels the reason you bought a website.
  • Can you speak to a past client? A builder proud of their work will hand you a name within the hour.

Any quote that survives those five questions is worth considering, at any price band. Most don't survive the first one.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 5-page website cost in Cape Town?

Realistically R8,500 to R25,000 for professional custom work. Below that you are usually buying a template with your logo dropped in; above that you are usually paying agency overheads. At RogueTech a 5-page site falls between our Bronze (R8,500) and Silver (R22,000) packages depending on features like booking or content management.

Do I pay monthly for my website?

Not for the build — our packages are once-off and you own the result. The only recurring costs are hosting and your domain (yours, in your name), and an optional care plan from R450/month if you want us to handle updates, backups and changes for you.

Who owns the website once it is built?

You do — domain, code, content and design, all registered and delivered in your name. This matters: with most subscription website services, cancelling your R499/month plan means your website disappears. That never happens with a site you own.

How long does a website take to build?

A Bronze starter site is typically live inside two weeks. A Silver business site usually takes three to five weeks including content and revisions. Custom web applications and SaaS builds are scoped individually — think in months, with working software demonstrated weekly.

Do you build e-commerce websites?

Yes. A straightforward catalogue-and-checkout store fits in the Silver package; larger stores or custom commerce logic (quoting, wholesale pricing, subscriptions) move into Gold territory. We will tell you honestly which one you need.

Why are agency quotes so much higher for the same website?

You are paying for the agency, not just the website: account managers, offices, and processes designed for corporate clients. The build work is often comparable. Our model cuts that layer out — senior development, direct communication, roughly half the price of packages that start at R25,000 to R50,000.
